Ipoh in 5 days: the city plus the best day trips
Spend days 1 and 2 in the city, eating and walking the Old Town. Use day 3 for the cave temples and Kellie's Castle or Gopeng, which are all within about 16 km. Give day 4 to Cameron Highlands, at least 1.5 hours' drive each way. On day 5, take the half-hour train to Kuala Kangsar or go to Pangkor Island.

Road routes from D Eastern. Day 3 and Day 5 offer a choice: pick one.
Five days is enough to eat your way round Ipoh and still get out into Perak. The city is the base: the Old Town is about 10 minutes' walk from Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, and every day trip below comes back in time for dinner. The plan puts the closest trips first and the longest in the middle, so you can swap days around the weather.
Distances are straight-line estimates from OpenStreetMap coordinates unless a source gives a road distance. Drive times come from the sources listed and depend on traffic.
Days 1 and 2: the city
Don't rush the city. For food, follow our 2-day Ipoh food weekend: dim sum on Jalan Leong Sin Nam, white coffee at Sin Yoon Loong or Nam Heong, bean sprout chicken at Lou Wong and the Gerbang Malam night market. For sights, take day 1 of Ipoh in 1, 2 or 3 days and the Old Town heritage walk, with Concubine Lane, the Birch clock tower and the railway station. Book Han Chin Pet Soo online before you arrive, as visits are by appointment only.
Day 3: cave temples, Kellie's Castle or Gopeng (south of Ipoh)
Everything on day 3 lies to the south, within about 16 km, so you can mix and match.
Morning: cave temples. Take a Grab to Gunung Rapat, about 5 km away. Visit Sam Poh Tong first, as it closes early (about 7:30–8am to 2–2:30pm in 2026 listings, checked Nov 2026), then Kek Lok Tong round the hill. Both are free. Cover shoulders and knees. Details are in our cave temples guide.
Afternoon, option A: Kellie's Castle. The unfinished mansion of Scottish planter William Kellie-Smith, near Batu Gajah, is about 14 km away (straight line). It is open daily 9.30am–10pm, so a late-afternoon visit avoids the worst heat. Tickets are about RM19 for foreign adults and RM9 for Malaysian adults (checked Nov 2026).
Afternoon, option B: Gopeng. Gopeng is about 16 km south (straight line), and one rafting operator puts it about 20 minutes from Ipoh. Two things draw people:
- White-water rafting on the Kampar River. Nomad Adventure lists 22 rapids from Grade 2 to Grade 3+, at RM159 per person plus 8% SST, minimum age 12 and a minimum of 4 people (checked Nov 2026). Its sessions run 9am–12.30pm and 2–5pm, with lunch. Book ahead.
- Gua Tempurung, a large limestone show cave. It opens at about 9am, the last dry tours start at about 4pm and the wet tours run in the morning only. The longer dry tour takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and has over 600 steps each way, so wear proper walking shoes. Prices range from about RM8 to about RM50 depending on the tour, and visitors without a MyKad pay more (checked Nov 2026).
For rafting, start the day in Gopeng and do the temples another time.
Day 4: Cameron Highlands
Cameron Highlands is the tea-growing hill station across the state border in Pahang. The newer road via Simpang Pulai is about 90 km to Tanah Rata and takes at least 1.5 hours each way, more in weekend traffic. The older route via Tapah is longer, about 114 km according to Travels with Sun (updated May 2024).
- By car or private tour: leave early. The same source says typical private tours collect you in Ipoh at 8.30am and cover places such as the BOH tea estate, a lavender garden and a strawberry farm.
- By bus: from Amanjaya (Terminal Meru Raya) to Tanah Rata, online booking sites list about three departures a day, at around 10.15am, 3.15–3.30pm and 5pm, taking about 2½ hours, with fares of about RM20–40 (checked Nov 2026). With those times, a same-day return by bus leaves very little time up the hill. The front desk can help book bus tickets.
- Bring: a light jacket, long trousers and rain gear, and travel-sickness tablets for the bends. Both routes are prone to landslides in the rainy season, and heavy rain tends to come in the evening, so aim to drive down in daylight.
Day 5: Kuala Kangsar, Pangkor Island or Lost World
Option A: Kuala Kangsar. Perak's royal town is about 25 km north-west. The ETS train takes around half an hour, with adult fares of about RM16–19 (checked Nov 2026). See the golden-domed Ubudiah Mosque (dress modestly and avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday) and Istana Kenangan, now the Royal Museum, which is free and opens about 10am–4.30pm with a Friday midday break (checked Nov 2026; check before a Monday visit). One travel writer reckons the sights take about two hours.
Option B: Pangkor Island. Lumut, the ferry town, is about 82 km by road, about 1 hour 15 minutes' drive. From Lumut Jetty the ferry takes about 20–40 minutes. Tourists must buy a return ticket, about RM21.60–23 per adult (checked Nov 2026). Fewer boats have run since April 2026 and sources disagree on the timetable, so check the time of the last boat back at the Lumut counter before you cross. On the island, pink taxi vans wait at the jetty, and motorbikes can be rented for about RM30–40 a day (checked Nov 2026).
Option C: Lost World of Tambun. The theme and water park is about 9 km away, about 15–20 minutes by Grab. It opens at 11am on weekdays and 10am at weekends and holidays. Walk-in adult tickets are about RM160 for non-Malaysians (checked Nov 2026). It is closed on Tuesdays except during Malaysian school and public holidays. See Ipoh with kids.

Practical tips for 5 days in Ipoh
- Car or no car: with a car, every trip here is a straightforward day out. There is free private parking on site at the rear, first come, first served. Without one, the cave temples, Kellie's Castle and Lost World are easy by Grab, and Kuala Kangsar by train. Cameron Highlands and Pangkor take more planning.
- Booking help: the front desk can help book Grab, bus and train tickets.
- Weather: October and November are the wettest months. Plan hill and island trips for dry days and keep a city day in reserve.
- Closing days: Lost World closes on Tuesdays outside holidays, and Kek Lok Tong's boat and bicycle hire is closed on Tuesdays.
