- Opening hours

Kellie's Castle is a red-brick ruin in a rubber estate beside the Sungai Raya, near Batu Gajah, south of Ipoh. From D Eastern it is about 14 km in a straight line (about 19 km by road), OpenStreetMap routing estimates about 20 minutes without traffic, so allow around 20–25 minutes by car or Grab. Visitors report spending 45 minutes to an hour inside, so it fits easily into a half day. It is worth the trip if you like history, ruins and photography. It is less suited to anyone who finds steep stairs or heat difficult.
What is the story of Kellie's Castle?
- William Kellie-Smith was born in 1870 in Kellas, Moray Firth, Scotland, and arrived in Malaya in 1890, aged 20, as a civil engineer.
- With his profits from land clearing he bought 1,000 acres of jungle in the Kinta district, planted rubber and went into tin mining. He named the estate Kinta Kellas, after his home farm, Easter Kellas.
- He brought his wife, Agnes, to Malaya in 1903. Building began in 1910 on a house called Kellas House.
- After his son was born in 1915, he planned a far grander castle in a mix of Moorish, Indo-Saracenic and Roman styles. It was to have four floors, 14 rooms and an elevator described as Malaya's first. He brought 70 craftsmen and building materials from Madras, India.
- In 1918 Spanish flu struck the workers. At their request he built a Hindu temple nearby, and they placed a statue of him among the deities on its wall in thanks.
- In 1926 Kellie-Smith died of pneumonia, aged 56, on a short trip to Lisbon. His widow returned to Scotland and the castle was never finished. It was later sold to the British company Harrisons and Crosfield.
- The castle has since been used as a film location, including for Anna and the King (1999).
Opening hours and tickets
Hours (official site, checked Nov 2026): daily, 9:30am–10pm, last entry 9:30pm.

- You can buy tickets online for a chosen date or at the counter. Staff check MyKad or passports for the Malaysian rate.
- Parking is about RM2 per vehicle inside the site (checked Nov 2026).
- Older prices (RM5 for Malaysians, RM10 for foreigners) are still repeated online, but the official ticket page shows the higher rates above.
How do I get to Kellie's Castle?
- Car or Grab: the castle is at KM 5.5, Jalan Gopeng, 31000 Batu Gajah. Grab is easy to book from Ipoh, but guides report that getting back is harder, so arrange your ride back before you go in or ask the driver to wait.
- Bus: a 2026 guide says there is no direct bus.
The front desk can help book a Grab, and bus and train tickets.
What can I combine with Kellie's Castle?
- Sam Poh Tong (Gunung Rapat) lies south of the city on the way out. It opens early and closes early: two 2026 guides give about 7:30–8am to 2–2:30pm, though hours vary (checked Nov 2026), so it fits a morning stop before the castle opens at 9:30am. Entry is free. Cover shoulders and knees. See our cave temples guide.
- Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, the temple built for Kellie-Smith's workers, is about 1.5 km from the castle. Look for his statue on the roof among the deities.
- Batu Gajah town has God's Little Acre, a cemetery for British planters, miners, police and soldiers, including those who died in the 1949–1960 insurgency. The town also has an old courthouse established in 1892. Check access locally before you plan a visit.
- Gunung Lang is not nearby. It is about 3 km north of central Ipoh, in the opposite direction, but it makes an easy afternoon back in the city. A short boat ride (about RM3 for adults, checked Nov 2026) crosses the lake to a small zoo and playground. Published hours differ between sources, so go before late afternoon.
Sample half day
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 8:00am | Leave the hotel by Grab, south to Sam Poh Tong |
| 8:15am | Sam Poh Tong (about 45 minutes) |
| 9:15am | Grab on to Kellie's Castle |
| 9:30am | Kellie's Castle opens: castle, rooftop and Kellas House ruins (about 1 hour) |
| 10:45am | Optional stop at Sri Maha Mariamman Temple |
| 11:30am | Head back to Ipoh for lunch |
| 12:00pm | Back in the New Town |
Late-day option: the castle is open until 10pm, so a visit from about 4:30pm avoids the midday heat. Another option is to see it on the way back from Gopeng or Gua Tempurung (see the Gopeng day trip).
Good to know
- Heat: the ruins have little shade and no fans or air-conditioning. Bring water.
- Stairs and floors: the spiral staircases are narrow and steep, and some wooden floors are in poor repair, so watch children closely. The site is not suited to buggies or wheelchairs.
- What is open: the rooftop, with views over the estate and river, is open. The tunnel said to lead to the temple has been sealed.
- Facilities: toilets are in the grounds, not in the castle. There is a simple café.
- No guided tours were available, according to a 2026 guide.
