Pangkor Island works as a day trip from Ipoh if you drive or take a Grab to Lumut. The road trip to Lumut jetty is about 82 km and takes around 1 hour 10–15 minutes. The ferry to Pangkor then takes about 20–40 minutes. A return ticket costs about RM21.60–23 per adult (checked Nov 2026; a fare rise to RM23 was reported in April 2026, so check at the counter). On the island, unmetered pink taxi vans take you to the beaches and sights. It is a full day with fixed ferry times on both ends, so it suits people happy with a few hours on the island rather than a lazy beach day. If you want to swim, eat seafood and watch the sunset, stay a night on the island.

How do I get from Ipoh to Lumut jetty?

By car or Grab

The drive is about 81.7 km, roughly 1 hour 12 minutes. There are car parks near Lumut jetty; a 2026 guide puts parking at about RM10–15 a day (checked Nov 2026); check the rate at the car park counter before you leave the car. A Grab one way is possible; we could not confirm the fare or how easy it is to get a car back from Lumut in the late afternoon, so check the app before you commit.

By bus

Buses are slow for a day trip, and the sources disagree. Booking sites list Kesatuan Express coaches from Terminal Meru Raya (formerly Amanjaya) to Lumut bus terminal, taking about 2 hours, and some also list Perak Transit. Departure times differ between listings, and one booking site showed only afternoon and evening departures (checked Nov 2026), so check times on the day before you plan around the bus. Lumut bus terminal is next to the jetty.

How does the Pangkor ferry work?

Ferries from Lumut are run by Konsortium Mesra Duta (2026 tickets show boats named Mesra 1 and Pan Silver 1). Sources disagree on the timetable. A May 2026 guide that checked it at the jetty lists eight boats a day each way from 1 April 2026, the first leaving Lumut at about 7:15 and the last boat back from Pangkor at about 18:15. Another 2026 guide says boats leave Lumut every 30–45 minutes until about 20:30 (checked Nov 2026). Check the day's times, and especially the last boat back, at the Lumut counter when you buy your ticket.

  • Fares (return only for tourists): adult about RM20 plus a RM1.60 fuel surcharge, about RM21.60, reported as RM23 from April 2026 (check at the counter); child (2–12) about RM11.80; under 2 free (checked Nov 2026). One-way tickets are only sold to residents.
  • Paying: the Lumut counter takes cash only. You can also book on pangkorferry.com or easybook.com, but you still collect a printed ticket with a seat number at the counter.
  • Crossing: about 20–40 minutes. Ferries stop at SPK (Sungai Pinang Kecil) jetty and then Pangkor Town jetty, both on the east coast.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early. Boarding starts 15 minutes before departure.
  • Book your return slot as soon as you land, especially at weekends and on holidays.

  • Dutch Fort (Kota Belanda). Built by the Dutch in 1670 to control the Perak tin trade, destroyed in 1690, rebuilt in 1743 and reconstructed in 1973. Nearby is Tiger Rock (Batu Bersurat), a boulder carved with "VOC", "If Carlo 1743" and a tiger seizing a child.
  • Fu Lin Kong temple (福灵宫, also spelt Foo Lin Kong). The island's big Chinese temple, at the foot of Pangkor Hill in Sungai Pinang Besar, with a miniature Great Wall of China winding up the hill behind the main hall, and ponds with big fish.
  • Pasir Bogak. The largest and most popular beach, busy on holidays.
  • Teluk Nipah. A beach on the west coast where most of the budget places to stay are.
