By bus
BAS.MY Ipoh routes A31A and A31B go from Medan Kidd, Ipoh's local bus station south of the railway station, to Kuala Kangsar (checked Nov 2026). We could not confirm the current fare or timetable, so check them on the BAS.MY Ipoh website or at Medan Kidd before you go.
By car or Grab
The drive is about 30–40 minutes. Kuala Kangsar is a small town, so if you go by Grab, check the app for a ride back before you plan your return, or take the train home.
Getting around in Kuala Kangsar
From Kuala Kangsar station, the Ubudiah Mosque is about 2.5 km away in a straight line (around a 32-minute walk, more by road), so a short car ride is easier in the heat; check the Grab app for availability when you arrive. Once you are on Bukit Chandan, the royal hill, the gallery, mosque and palaces are close together: the gallery to the mosque is about 380 m and the mosque to Istana Kenangan about 700 m (straight line).
What is there to see in Kuala Kangsar?
- Ubudiah Mosque. The golden-domed royal mosque on Jalan Istana, next to the Royal Mausoleum. It was built between 1913 and 1917 and designed by A.B. Hubback, who also designed Ipoh Railway Station. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome if they are suitably dressed and come outside prayer times. We found no official visiting hours, so avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday prayers.
- Istana Kenangan (Muzium Diraja, the Royal Museum). A wooden palace on stilts, said to have been built without a single nail. A major restoration finished in November 2019, and it is open as a museum with free entry. Recent listings give about 10:00–16:30, with a break on Fridays from 12:15 to 14:45 (checked Nov 2026). Sources disagree on whether it opens on Mondays, and one listing says some displays may be affected by repainting, so check the Perak State Museum Board website (muzium.perak.gov.my) before a Monday visit.
- Istana Iskandariah. The Sultan's official residence, a large marble palace with golden onion domes a short walk from Istana Kenangan. It is the official residence of the Sultan of Perak. We found no public visiting hours for it, so plan to see it from outside.
- Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah. A museum dedicated to Sultan Azlan Shah, in the old Istana Ulu just before the Ubudiah Mosque. It has been closed since 2023 for conservation and upgrading. In July 2025 the state government said it expected to reopen it in time for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, but we could not confirm that it has reopened, so phone 05-777 5362 before you plan around it.
- Malaysia's oldest rubber tree. Planted in 1877 near the Kuala Kangsar District Office from seeds that came from Kew Gardens via Singapore. The only survivor of the first trees, it stands near Masjid Ridhwaniah with information boards beside it.
- Labu sayong pottery. These clay water pitchers, said to keep water cool overnight, are made in Kampung Sayong across the Perak River. You can drive over the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Bridge. A small passenger boat used to cross from the town jetty, but we could not confirm that it still runs, so plan to go by road.
Where can I eat in Kuala Kangsar?
The Medan Selera Sungai Perak food court by the river jetty has plenty of stalls. Kuala Kangsar is known for laksa made with freshly made noodles, and for cendol (locally "cendoi"); one blogger photographed Cendol Mustafa at the riverside food court. Eateries near the Sayong boat jetty serve masak lemak ikan patin, catfish cooked in coconut milk.

Good to know
- What to wear at the mosque: visitors are asked to wear long trousers, and women to cover their hair. Robes have been provided at the entrance for visitors who need them.
- Fridays: Istana Kenangan closes over Friday prayers, roughly 12:15–14:45, so a Friday is the least convenient day.
- Komuter tickets are sold only on the day of travel, so arrive at Ipoh station 15–20 minutes early. For a reserved seat, take the ETS.
- Heat: the walks between sights are short but warm by midday, so start early and carry water.
- Help with tickets: the front desk can help book a Grab to the station, and ETS or bus tickets.
