Gopeng day trip from Ipoh: rafting, Gua Tempurung and a tin-mining town

Gopeng is about 16 km south of central Ipoh (straight line), and Gua Tempurung about 23 km, so allow 30–40 minutes by car or Grab. A day trip is worth it if you want river rafting or a cave tour; a morning rafting slot plus an afternoon dry cave tour fits in one day.

Rafting in the morning, a dry cave tour in the afternoon. Book rafting ahead with an operator. Muzium Gopeng opens at weekends; check hours before you go.

Gopeng, a former tin-mining town south of Ipoh, is the base for rafting on the Kampar River and for the Gua Tempurung cave. From central Ipoh, Gopeng town is about 16 km away in a straight line (about 18 km by road), and Gua Tempurung is about 23 km away (about 29 km by road). OpenStreetMap routing estimates about 25 minutes to Gopeng and about 35 minutes to Gua Tempurung without traffic, so plan on 30–40 minutes each way.

How do I get to Gopeng from Ipoh?

  • By car: take the North–South Expressway to the Gopeng exit, turn left, and Gua Tempurung is about 2 km on.
  • By Grab: easy to book outwards from Ipoh. For the return, agree a pick-up time with your driver or ask the operator about transfers before you go.
  • By bus: BAS.MY Ipoh route A34 runs from Medan Kidd bus terminal in Ipoh to Kampar via Gopeng bus station, about every 30 minutes, and takes about 30 minutes to Gopeng (Transit app, checked Nov 2026). The rafting bases and Gua Tempurung are outside the town, so you would still need a transfer from there.

The front desk can help book a Grab, and bus and train tickets.

White-water rafting on the Kampar River

The Kampar River (also called Sungai Itek) has around 14 to 22 rapids depending on the section, graded about 2 to 3+. You book directly with a private operator for a fixed departure and make your own way to their base near Gopeng.

Two operators whose published terms we checked, in alphabetical order (not a recommendation; others run the same river):

Safety and booking points from the operators' pages:

  • You sign a liability waiver. Guides are described as certified by the International Rafting Federation and in swift-water rescue, and helmets, life jackets and paddles are provided.
  • One operator states that bookings are non-refundable, and that trips may be changed or cancelled if conditions are unsafe.
  • Ask the operator about its licence, guide certification and insurance before you pay. Licensed travel agencies and tour operators are listed in the Ministry of Tourism (MOTAC) TOBTAB register, which you can filter by state.

Water levels and season: water levels depend on rain, and one operator says it cannot confirm the level until the day of the trip. At high water the route gets longer and the rules stricter, and if conditions are too rough you may be moved to a calmer section or a different activity. October and November are Ipoh's wettest months, so expect higher water and changes then.

What to bring: a change of clothes, a towel, sun cream, insect repellent, a plastic bag for wet clothes, and shoes or sandals with a strap. Trim your nails, leave jewellery behind, and avoid white clothes.

Gua Tempurung: is the cave open?

Gua Tempurung is a limestone cave about 4.5 km long, about 1.9 km of it open to the public, named after its five coconut-shell-shaped domes.

Status and hours: 2026 travel listings show it open daily, with recent visitor reviews from 2026. Two April 2026 guides agree it opens at about 9am, with the last dry tours starting at about 4pm (one gives closing as 5pm). Wet tours start only in the morning, about 9–10:30am in one guide, and must be booked ahead (checked Nov 2026). One 2025 reviewer reported the lights going off at about 5:20pm with visitors still inside, so start early.

Tour types:

  • Dry tours use stairs and walkways. The counter tours are named Golden Flowstone and Top of the World, and one operator says the dry route involves over 600 steps. Visitors report 40 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Wet tours (Top of the World plus Short River Adventure, and the Grand Tour) involve wading in the underground river, crawling and sliding. The Grand Tour is reported to take about 4 hours. Wet tours have minimum group sizes and should be booked ahead.

Prices: there is no official price list online, and published counter prices disagree. Across the guides we checked, adult tickets range from about RM8 for the shortest dry tour to about RM50 for the Grand Tour, and visitors without a MyKad pay more: one guide's list (dated January 2024) gives about RM20–50 for non-MyKad adults and RM8–30 for MyKad holders (checked Nov 2026). Confirm the current price with the cave's operator, APT Consortium (Instagram @guatempurung.official), before you go. As one example of a guided package, Jommoutdoor charges about RM98 for Malaysians and RM118 for foreigners (checked Nov 2026), with a minimum of 5 people and booking at least 7 days ahead. Check the minimum age when you book.

Wear sports shoes, not slippers, and bring a waterproof phone bag for wet tours. The stairs are steep and can be slippery.

Gopeng town and Kopisan

Gopeng was a tin-mining town for about 100 years from the 1870s, shaped by Mandailing settlers from Sumatra, Chinese miners led by Eu Kong, and European mining companies.

  • Muzium Gopeng (28 Jalan Eu Kong) is volunteer-run and housed in a wooden building that was once Eu Kong's horse stables. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Listings agree it opens at weekends, but published hours and weekday opening differ between sources, so check before you go.
  • Gopeng Heritage House (6 Jalan Sungai Itek), the museum's annex, is a short walk away. Ask at the museum whether it is open.
  • Kampung Baru Kopisan, on the edge of Gopeng, takes its name from coffee ("Coffee Mountain"). Since 2015, villagers have planted about 4,000 Liberica coffee trees around the village.
