Cameron Highlands day trip from Ipoh: drive, tea and what to expect

Cameron Highlands is about 90 km from Ipoh, at least 1.5 hours each way by car via Simpang Pulai, more in traffic. A day trip works by car or hired driver on a weekday: BOH Sungei Palas tea garden (closed Mondays) and a strawberry farm. By bus it is not practical in a day, and many people stay overnight.

How to get there
  • Car or hired driver: at least 1.5 hours each way via Simpang Pulai, more in traffic
  • Bus: not practical for a day trip
Busy times · best time to go
Go on a weekday. Be at the tea garden by about 8:45, before the crowds, and leave the highlands by about 15:30, before the late-afternoon queues. The main road is busy at weekends. BOH Sungei Palas is closed on Mondays, except school and public holidays.

Cameron Highlands is about 90 km from Ipoh, and the drive takes at least 1.5 hours each way without traffic. You can do it as a day trip by car or with a hired driver, ideally on a weekday: a morning at the BOH tea garden at Sungei Palas, a strawberry farm in Brinchang, and an early start back. It is a long day, though. You spend three hours or more on a winding mountain road, weekend traffic in the highlands can be severe, and the bus timetable does not really allow a return trip in one day. If you want the cool air and the tea fields at a gentle pace, many visitors stay a night up there instead.

How do I get from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands?

By car (the practical choice)

Take the road from Simpang Pulai, just south of Ipoh, up Federal Route 185, which opened in 2004 and runs through the northern highlands. One guide recommends it over the older, more winding route from Tapah (Route 59) if you get carsick.

  • Time: at least 1.5 hours to the highlands with no traffic. Arriving around lunchtime usually means queues.
  • Before you go: check your tyres, fill up, and use a navigation app, which helps you avoid accidents and fallen trees.

By Grab or hired driver

We could not confirm a current price for a Grab or private driver, so ask for a quote for a full day including waiting time. For a day trip, agree before you set off that the driver will wait for you or come back for the return, rather than relying on finding a car in the highlands.

By bus (not a good day trip)

Unititi buses run from Terminal Amanjaya (Meru Raya), north of Ipoh, to Tanah Rata. A November 2026 booking search showed:

Leaves AmanjayaArrives Tanah RataFare (checked Nov 2026)
10:1512:35about RM35
15:1517:35about RM35
17:0019:20about RM40

The first bus arrives after midday. When we searched, the same booking site listed no times for the return from Tanah Rata to Ipoh, so check return times at Tanah Rata bus terminal or with Unititi before you rely on one. By bus, plan to stay at least one night.

What can I see in Cameron Highlands in a day?

BOH Sungei Palas Tea Garden

BOH's tea estate near Brinchang, with a café looking over the plantation, a gift shop and a small exhibition gallery. BOH's own page lists:

  • Open: Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30–16:30.
  • Closed: Mondays, except school and public holidays.
  • Tours: a tea-tasting and factory tour at 9:00 (about RM50 per person, minimum two people), and a longer tour with a plantation walk at 11:00 (about RM100 per person, minimum four) (checked Nov 2026). Prices are before tax.
  • Admission: the official page lists no entry fee for the tea centre itself.
  • Outside food and drink are not allowed in the café.

Strawberry farms

Strawberry farms cluster around Brinchang and the Kea Farm stretch of road. Big Red Strawberry Farm is listed as open daily, about 8:30–18:00, with free entry; you pay for what you pick (checked Nov 2026). Ask the picking price at the counter before you start. It gets packed between 11:00 and 15:00 at weekends and in school holidays, so go mid-morning on a weekday.

Markets

The Kea Farm market is near the strawberry farms on the Kea Farm stretch of road, a short drive from Brinchang. It opens daily; listings give roughly 7:00–8:30 until about 18:00–19:00 (checked Nov 2026). Stalls sell strawberries, sweet corn, vegetables, flowers, souvenirs and snacks. Like the rest of the main road, it gets busy at weekends.

Mossy Forest: check before you go

The Mossy Forest on Gunung Brinchang, reached by the road past the Sungei Palas tea garden, is not a safe bet for a day trip. A 2026 hiking guide reports that the boardwalk was closed indefinitely from October 2025 after landslide and rain damage, that a guide is required, and that only registered jeeps may go beyond the checkpoint on the road up. In March 2026 a tour operator said the forestry department had closed the boardwalk with no confirmed reopening date. Some visitor reviews from mid-2026 describe walking the boardwalk again, but we could not confirm a reopening from an official source (checked Nov 2026). Ask a licensed tour operator or the Pahang Forestry Department before you plan around it.

Good to know

  • Bring a jacket. The highlands average about 18°C, daytime highs rarely pass 25°C, and nights can drop to about 9°C at the higher points. That is a big change from Ipoh.
  • Rain: October and November are the wettest months, with April and May close behind. Landslides can happen on the roads in the rainy season, so check conditions before you set off.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays. In June 2026 a long weekend jammed the roads from Simpang Pulai and Tapah right through Brinchang and Tanah Rata; some drivers took four hours to cover trips that normally take under 20 minutes.
  • Mondays: BOH Sungei Palas is closed.
  • Carsickness: the road climbs to settlements between about 800 m and 1,600 m. Take something if you are prone to it.
  • Help booking: the front desk can help book a Grab or bus tickets, and drivers can use the free parking at the rear (first come, first served).
