Durian season in Perak: when and where to eat durian near Ipoh
Perak's main durian season usually runs from about June to August, and FAMA has put the Perak harvest around late June or early July. A smaller, less reliable season sometimes comes around November to January, but not every year. The best-known kampung durian areas include Kuala Kangsar, Batu Kurau and Mualim.
Perak is one of Malaysia's big durian states. It produced about 59,217 tonnes of durian worth around RM462 million in 2024, according to figures reported by Bernama, and it is known above all for kampung (village) durian from old orchard trees. If you are planning a durian trip to Ipoh, timing matters more than anything else.
When is durian season in Perak?
- Main season: roughly June to August. Durian sellers and calendars put Malaysia's main harvest in these months, with Perak among the states that peak then. Ipoh Echo (2023), reporting on FAMA, the federal agricultural marketing authority, put the Perak season "around late June or early July".
- A smaller, less reliable crop around November–January. This is not guaranteed. One durian calendar lists Perak's secondary season as November and December. Durian calendars note that the second flush "doesn't happen in every state". In 2025–26 there was an off-season glut: The Star (January 2026) reported harvests in Penang, Perak, Pahang and Johor at the same time, an orchard owner called it a "bonus" season, and Ipoh Echo announced "Durian season is back!" for farmers' market promotions in early January 2026. Bernama reported that the Tapah crop was expected to end by late January 2026.
What this means for a visit in late 2026 or early 2027: there may be some durian about from November to January, but we can't promise it. When we checked in early November 2026 we found no reports yet of an off-season crop in Perak this year. For a durian-focused trip, aim for late June to July.
Where do Perak's durians come from?
Ipoh Echo (2023) names Batu Kurau, Kuala Kangsar and Mualim as notable kampung durian areas, and says the state planned to make Batu Kurau and Selama hubs for Black Thorn and cloned durians. Many Perak kampung durians come from heirloom trees planted decades ago.
Bernama has also covered the Jalan Pahang area of Tapah, where Orang Asli collectors and farmers sell what is known locally as "Durian Bukit Jalan Pahang, Tapah".
Varieties you will see on Perak stalls include Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, IOI and kampung durian (Bernama, via OrangPerak, 2025).
How far are these places from central Ipoh?
| Place | Straight-line distance from D Eastern | By car |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Kangsar (town) | about 25 km | about 42 km by road, about 40 minutes |
| Tapah (Jalan Pahang area is beyond the town) | about 48 km | about 55 km by road, about 50 minutes to the town |
| Batu Kurau | about 53 km | about 91 km by road, about 1.5 hours |
| Mualim district (Tanjung Malim area) | about 108 km | about 123 km by road, about 1.5–2 hours |
Drive times are routing estimates without traffic (checked Nov 2026), so allow extra at weekends and in the season.
Only Kuala Kangsar is an easy half-day from Ipoh. The others are better treated as stops on a longer drive.
We could not find a reliable source for named durian orchards open to visitors in Sungai Siput, Gopeng or Tambun, so we have not listed any.
Can I visit a durian farm near Ipoh?
The clearest option is Duriotourism at MARDI Kuala Kangsar, the government agricultural research institute's durian park at Kampung Talang Ulu, Kuala Kangsar.
- What it is: a guided visit to MARDI's durian orchard, where you eat freshly harvested durians. In 2026 the visit featured MARDI's MS88 hybrid, with mangosteens and pomelos too.
- When: the durian-eating package is seasonal. In 2026 it was running in early July and ended on 12 July. 2027 dates are announced closer to the time, on MARDI's eBooking site and the MARDI Kuala Kangsar Facebook page.
- Price (MARDI eBooking page, checked Nov 2026): adults about RM50 for Malaysians and RM70 for non-Malaysians. Children aged 7–12 pay RM18 (Malaysians) or RM50, and under-7s go free. Seniors (60+) and disabled visitors pay RM35 (Malaysians) or RM50.
- Days: the eBooking page lists farm tours daily except Friday, 10am–4pm. Book online in advance.
- Getting there: Kuala Kangsar is about half an hour from Ipoh by ETS train. MARDI is at Kampung Talang Ulu, so plan a Grab or car for the last leg and check the Grab app for a ride back.
How do durian buffets work?
A durian buffet is an all-you-can-eat session at a stall or farm, usually with a time limit. In a 2024 round-up of Malaysian buffets (none in Perak), Vulcan Post found that:
- Most give you one hour, and some give two.
- Most serve kampung durian. Premium varieties such as Musang King cost more or are excluded.
- Some take bookings and others are first come, first served.
- Prices ranged from about RM30 to RM70 per person, with one premium buffet from RM168 (2024 prices). We could not find current published buffet prices in Perak, so ask the price and time limit before you sit down.
How much does durian cost in Perak?
Prices swing a lot with the harvest.
- In the main season, The Star put Musang King at about RM60–80 per kg.
- During the January 2026 glut it fell to about RM20–30 per kg.
- Bernama reported grade A Tapah durian at RM8–11 per kg in January 2026.
Treat these as a rough guide only (checked Nov 2026) and confirm the price per kilo before the seller opens a fruit.
Durian etiquette: can I take durian back to my room?
Usually not. Many hotels in Malaysia and Singapore don't allow durian inside, because of the strong smell. The Star reported a 2025 case in Singapore where a tourist was charged a S$200 (about RM659) cleaning fee after housekeeping smelt durian in her room.
If you are staying with us and want to bring durian back, ask the front desk first. The simplest approach is to eat durian at the stall or farm, where sellers open the fruit for you.
A few more tips:
- Choose your fruit, agree the price per kilo, then let the seller open it.
- Eat in the open air and wash your hands before getting into a car or Grab.
