Where to park in Ipoh Old Town

Ipoh street parking is paid digitally, mainly through the Park@Perak app. Physical coupons are no longer used. Charges apply from 8am to 6pm, except on Sundays and public holidays. Old Town spaces fill fast between 10am and 5pm, especially at weekends. Hotel guests can park free on site and walk to Old Town in about 10 minutes.

Parking in Ipoh Old Town is cheap but scarce. The streets around Concubine Lane, Kong Heng Square and the white coffee shops on Jalan Bandar Timah are narrow and fill quickly on weekend afternoons. Street parking is paid through a phone app, not paper coupons. Charges apply on weekdays and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm.

If you are staying at D Eastern Hotel, the easiest plan is to leave the car behind. The hotel has free private parking at the rear. No reservation is needed and spaces are first come, first served. From there, Old Town and Concubine Lane are about a 10-minute walk.

How does street parking work in Ipoh?

Ipoh City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, MBI) runs on-street parking. The system has moved from meters to scratch coupons and now to digital payment.

  • No coupons any more. Physical parking coupons are no longer used in Ipoh city, and all parking fees are paid online (Ipoh Hyperlocal, July 2024). Some older travel guides still tell you to buy coupons. They are out of date.
  • The app is Park@Perak. MBI describes it as its smart parking application (Ipoh Echo, May 2026). It is available on the Play Store, App Store and Huawei AppGallery. Flexi Parking and the Touch 'n Go eWallet are also accepted.

What are the parking hours in Ipoh?

According to an MBI parking form (September 2025), parking charges are enforced from 8.00am to 6.00pm, except on Sundays and public holidays. Outside those hours, and all day on Sundays and public holidays, you don't pay for council street parking. Saturdays are not exempt.

How much does street parking cost?

MBI's own FAQ still lists the rates set under the old coupon system: RM0.30 for half an hour, RM0.60 an hour or RM4.00 a day (checked Nov 2026). We could not confirm that the Park@Perak app charges exactly the same in every street, so check the charge the app shows when you start a session.

Car parks near Ipoh Old Town

  • UTC / Pasar Besar Ipoh car park (basement). This is in New Town, close to the hotel. Rates (checked Nov 2026, listing updated February 2026): about RM0.60 for the first hour and each hour after, up to about RM4.00 a day from 6am to 6pm, then a flat RM2.00 or so per entry from 6pm to 6am. It is open 24 hours, with the same rates every day, including public holidays. Pay at the exit by Touch 'n Go or by scanning an e-wallet code. Height limit 2.0 m. There are two 22 kW Type 2 EV chargers (parking is still charged). The main entrance is about 180 m from the hotel (straight line).
  • TIMES Parking at Jubilee Park. An open-air, cashless car park in Taman Jubilee, in the New Town. The operator says Concubine Lane and Old Town are about 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by Grab from there. Its guide does not list rates for this site, so check the signs at the entrance.

When is Old Town busiest?

  • Peak: about 10am to 5pm, especially at weekends (TIMES Parking guide).
  • Easiest: early morning. Weekday mornings are quieter, though some shops may still be closed.
  • Sundays and public holidays: council street parking is free, but weekends are still the busiest time in Old Town.
  • Old Town streets are narrow and many are one-way, so it is easy to circle for a while.

Is it easier to walk from D Eastern?

For most guests, yes. Park once at the rear of the hotel (free, no reservation), then walk:

  • Old Town and Concubine Lane: about 10 minutes.
  • Han Chin Pet Soo museum: about 800 m.
  • Little India: about 15 minutes.
  • Ipoh Railway Station: about 1.4 km.

If it is raining or you are carrying shopping, the front desk can help you book a Grab.

Sunday mornings: Memory Lane flea market

The Memory Lane flea market (also called Pasar Karat) runs on Sunday mornings along Jalan Horley. That is about 200 m from the hotel (straight line). One guide gives 6.30am to about noon and recommends arriving early to avoid the crowds. It draws crowds, so allow extra time if you are driving around the area on a Sunday morning.

Quick tips

  • Download Park@Perak before you arrive, and set up Touch 'n Go if you use it.
  • Aim for Old Town before 10am, or walk from your hotel.
  • Check the street signs. Private lots and mall car parks in and around Old Town set their own rates and hours.
